FROM THE AMERICAN SENTINEL,

TO IVANHOE.

On perusing his stanzas "What is Love?"
And what is love? - a transient flame
Unfit to warm the manly breast.
Unbending soul, and blasting fame,
Distracting thought and poisoning rest.
It is a weakness of the mind,
Which reason shuns and wisdom flies:
For he within its meshes twined,
Must burst his bonds, or swiftly dies,
Entranced by fancy's faithless train.
The wretch who loves is lost forever,
His track is filled with shadows vain.
Which offer joy - but give it never.
Youth hang on beauty's syren tongue
While hope is warm, and life is gay,
But when with woe his heart is wrung
He finds the charm has passed away.
Then shun, oh! shun the transient flame.
'Tis worthless of a manly breast;
Twill bend thy pride, and blast thy fame,
Distract thy thoughts, disturb thy rest.
