THE FRIENDS OF PEACE

In the county of Berkley, as evidence of their respect or, and approbation of the political course of their representative the honorable John Baker, gave a splendid entertainment on Wednesday last, at the Globe tavern, Martinsburg. The honorable Joseph Lewis, jr. esq. also, by special invitation, favored the company with his presence. The assemblage was numerous and respectable; and it may with truth be said, that on no occasion was a greater degree of harmony and correct deportment manifested. After the cloth was removed, the following toasts were drank; colonel David Hunter presiding-supported by col. Elisha Boyd.

1. Our country; perpetual be its freedom, its union and independence.

2. The war; rashly and unnecessarily begun; may it be speedily terminated by an honorable peace.

3. The freedom of speech, and the freedom of the press; the American who is prepared tamely to surrender them, is already a slave.

4. The address of the thirty four members of congress to their constituents; it is calumniated because its arguments are irrefutable.

5. The memory of general Lingan, the revolutionary hero and patriot, at whose death liberty weeps, and at the manner of which his country blushes--he has fallen in defence of the liberties of his countrymen.

6. Alexander Contee Hanson, and his intrepid associates: "Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God."

7. The gallant officers and seamen of our little navy: To the myriads of their foes. Leonidas and his chosen few opposed an unavailing resistance.

8. The memory of General Washington, our political father: How soon have his children forgotten his precepts! how widely have they strayed from the path he pointed out!

9. Our brethren of the North; we sympathize in their sufferings, we deprecate a dissolution of the bands that unite us--May they begin nothing, of which they have not well considered the end.

10. The administrations of Washington and Adams; take them all in all, we fear we shall never look upon their like again.

11. The despot of Europe; may heaven save us from his grasp.

12. The patriots of Spain and Portugal---

(Messrs. Baker and Lewis having retired)

13. The honorable John Baker, and our worthy guest, the honorable Joseph Lewis, jr. disciples of Washington, and true to his principles; may they live to see in the triumph of their principles, the sun of prosperity, again beaming upon the nation.
