FOR THE WATCHMAN.

In consequence of Mr. Rodney, one of our Representatives in Congress, being appointed to a seat in the Senate of the U. S. an interest will very naturally be excited amongst the people respecting a proper candidate to be chosen to succeed him; inasmuch as it is believed that the Governor of the State of Delaware will forthwith issue his proclamation for an election.

It will be recollected that but a small part of the present Congress, is yet expired, and that the term of service of the member elect, does not expire until the 4th of March 1823.

During the present & succeeding session of congress much business may come before them, of great moment as regards the interest of the State of Delaware. Her citizens are deeply interested in many of the great questions which are now before the public, most of which, probably, will shortly claim the attention of Congress: great, because they are subjects of national concern; and of increasing magnitude and weight, as regards the interests and views of the citizens of this State.

The next question is, who shall the free and independent citizens of the State of Delaware, select to represent them in the Lower House, in conjunction with our present member, during the remaining part of the present Congress?

Without presuming improperly to influence the minds of any, the writer of this article, will, upon the present occasion, venture to bring forward, for the consideration of his fellow citizens, the name of a gentleman, who, as regards his practical knowledge, his zeal for the public good, and integrity of principle, stands second to none in the State: at least we know of none.

Much evil and inconvenience have often arisen in legislative bodies for want of having therein a due proportion of members composed of thinking and practical men—men of sound and deliberative minds; independent in principle, and of sterling practical knowledge—Such a man is CALEB KIRK, Esq:

Upon the present occasion we are glad to have it in our power to observe, that Mr. Kirk, if taken up as a candidate, will be supported by all parties.

Indeed, in this part of the State, as far as we know, but one sentiment prevails.
