The Citizen complains that while there are only seventy-five Irishmen in the New York Custom House, there can not be less than eighty Americans, all natives of "blue light" New England, serving under Collector Redfield. A reform of an abuse so monstrous is loudly called for. The Citizen recommends "a clean sweep" of every New Englander; and Irishmen of course should be put in their places. Every New England State voted against Buchanan, says the Citizen,
"Yet in this Presidential election, as in times past, the Irish votes have turned the scale. They have decided not only the fate of the Democratic party, but the fate of the Union. Never were suffrages cast into the ballot-box from more patriotic or more disinterested motives. While natives worked hard for the destruction of the Union, Irishmen worked as hard, and more successfully, to save it."
