Full Text

Candid, and to the Point.

"Confession is good for the soul," they say; and so we suppose the Milwaukee Sentinel feels good after having, in a fit of frenzy upon hearing of the great Democratic triumph in Connecticut, relieved itself of the following:

"The best speakers and wire-pullers the democracy could produce were precipitated upon Connecticut. New York city, of which a considerable portion of Connecticut is a sort of suburb, threw its influence and money into the scale. Hence Connecticut was carried by the enemy. Served us right, too. The republicans, when they had the power, ought to have enfranchised all the citizens of the state. There are upwards of fourteen hundred colored men over twenty-one years of age in Connecticut who ought to have been made voters long ago. Had this been done, the scale would have been turned and the republicans would have carried the state by as large majorities as those now given for the democratic candidates. The party that has right on its side will prosper, but a party that is loud in professions, but cowardly in performance, is doomed to defeat as it ought to be."

We subscribe to that part in italics. Butler in the United States Congress and the Sentinel in Milwaukee, are entitled to the thanks of the people for telling the truth occasionally. Oh! that they would stick to it always!
