CHICAGO, ILL. (ANP)-With the re-election of Dr. Robert H. Johnson and his entire cabinet, and with approval of his program by the 1,300 delegates representing lodges from this country and from abroad, the 55th annual convention of the IBPOEW reached its climax last week.
Chicago, with its broad streets, lakeshore drives, shady parks and its mid-western hospitality, proved a gracious host, despite Mayor Martin H. Kennelly, who was to attend the sessions last Monday, in a telegram said he could not appear.
Highlight of the convention for the local citizens was on Tuesday afternoon with the annual parade. Police estimated that the 4-hour long parade drew from 330,000 to 600,000.
Elks began arriving in the city last week-end, and by Tuesday railroad officials estimated they had carried at least 25,000 delegates and visitors, while the bus lines and private transportation accounted for another 15,000 to 20,000 people.
Among the highlights were the annual East-West game, played before more than 10,000; presentation of the Elijah Lovejoy Award to Thurgood Marshall of the NAACP, a musical at Corpus Christi center; an Oratorical Contest; a Bathing Beauty pageant, and the Grand Ball on Thursday night.
Atlantic City, N. J., has been selected as the site of the 1955 convention.
