Walter Goldsmith of Harlem and Tom McCartney of Chinook were the representatives of Blaine county at the Governor's Conference on Education held in Helena on Friday and Saturday of last week. Approximately 175 delegates and interested Montanans attended the two-day meeting.
The delegates were divided into 16 discussion tables, and people from the different parts of the state and representing the different vocations and professions were at each table. This was done in order to get the views of all of the people.
Specific questions were discussed at each table and then recommendations were made. The recommendations from all 16 tables were then compiled to make the final report from the state delegates to President Eisenhower's Educational Conference in November.
The questions discussed were:
(1) What should be done to meet our school building and equipment needs?
(2) How can schools get enough competent teachers and keep them?
(3) What should our schools accomplish?
(4) In view of the recommendations made on the above questions, how can we finance our educational program?
Complete Report Later
The complete report from the State Conference on Education will be published at a later date. The Blaine county delegates advised that these questions be given deep thought in the mean time to see if the people's answers will be the same as the delegates at the State Conference.
The Blaine county delegates explained that it was pointed out at the State Conference that the movement for better education and education facilities in Montana and the Nation had just begun. It was explained that education is a business and a big one; and that it needs long-range planning.
