Antarctic Personnel
From Financial Squeeze
WASHINGTON—The Navy said today it is drafting legislation to rescue Navy men on antarctic duty from a financial squeeze.
Rep. Saylor (R-Pa) disclosed the fiscal tangle today when he visited the McMurdo Sound base in antarctica.
Navy personnel assigned to duty at antarctic installations received travel orders entitling them to extra per diem payments ranging in some cases to more than $5 a day.
However, the comptroller general subsequently ruled such orders could not apply for as long a period as the time the men were to spend in the antarctic.
Men who had exercised their privilege of drawing the pay in advance and had spent it would be squeezed by refund demands.
