Full Text

On Tuesday last a telegram from Oxford, Miss., summoned to that place our esteemed townsman, Mr. J. R. Mayson, and his wife. Thomas Mayson, a student at the State University, had fallen from the bridge that spans the railroad cut between the University and the city, and it was feared had sustained fatal injuries. His bereaved parents were overjoyed to find on their arrival at his bedside that his wounds were not necessarily mortal. He had been sitting on the railing of the bridge—a too common habit with the students—when his head became dizzy and losing his balance he was precipitated headlong from the bridge, falling to the railroad bed beneath, a distance of fully forty feet. His surviving the fearful fall is almost a miracle in itself. He was conveyed home on Wednesday night's train, and all that the warmest solicitude and kindest nursing and care can do will be given. We trust our young friend may rapidly recover from his truly terrible sufferings.
