ODE TO LIBERTY.
Sung at Tiverton, on the fifth of July.
Hail, Liberty! celestial guest
We smile to see thy brilliant crest
Illume the regions of the west,
And Freedom's Sun resplendent shine
The world, despising thy mild reign.
Was bound in Slavery's hateful chain,
Till Heaven design'd the western main
A bless'd asylum for thy shrine.
Our Fathers fled at thy command
Before the persecuting hand
Of Slavery in their natal land
To enjoy the sweets of liberty—
A nation rose whose glory shone
From frigid to the torrid zone,
The goddess mark'd them for her own,
And wond'ring nations own'd them Free.
The eastern world with sad surprize
"Saw in the west a nation rise."
Whose glory tow'ring to the skies
O'er the Atlantic cast a shade—
With envy in their hearts they sought
A scheme by wicked counsels wrought,
With everlasting mischief fraught,
To check the rising growth of trade.
They rose indignant at the stroke,
Denied the right to impose the yoke,
The iron bands of Slavery broke
And Freedom bless'd this happy land—
Brave WASHINGTON the Patriots led.
MONTGOMERY and WARREN bled,
Th' imbruing foe affrighted fled
Beyond th' Atlantic's eastern strand.
Then, Liberty and peace combin'd
Were in this hallow'd clime enshrin'd
Art, Science o'er the triumph mind
Diffus'd her most resplendent glow
Great-Britain's proud, imperious knaves
Obtain'd dominion on the waves;+
And made her free-born brethren slaves:
To fight the battles of their foe.
Again to arms the nation flew
To smiling peace they bid adieu,
The gleaming sword in vengeance drew,
To Victory pledg'd their mighty host:
Wilt thou, O Liberty inspire
Thy sons with patriotic fire,
To face the rage of Britain's ire,
And lay the tyrant's laurels low?
Let Union be their rallying word,
With glory impel the sword:.
Our Country's rights and honor guard,
Or bravely bleed in virtue's cause
Tho' the Atlantic ocean laves
The eastern shore with swelling waves
Americans will not be slaves
Nor yield to Britain's haughty frowns
Tho' menac'd now by war's alarms.
Thrill'd by the clamorous din of arms,
We fondly look for peaceful charms
Down the gliding stream of time—
Yes, Peace, with all her smiling train,
Shall bless this genial land again,
And thou, O Liberty, shall reign
In glory o'er this happy clime.
