Full Text

Fire.--Between twelve and one o'clock on Thursday morning last, Mr. and Mrs. Story were aroused from their sleep by the room in which they were sleeping being filled with smoke. They got up and examined the fire-place and found all right, and, supposing the wind blew the smoke down the chimney, were about to retire, when taps from below, made by the man who was on watch in the hall, caused Mr. Story to proceed thence. On first entering he discovered nothing, but upon close investigation, observed a fire in the most remote corner of one of the cells, in the ceiling. He then went up stairs and cut through the floor, when the flames shot up, and would soon have been past quenching had not water been very close. It is supposed that McDonald, the prisoner charged with forgery, was the principal one engaged in this act, and he is now chained to the floor to prevent further mischief.
