THREW A BOX OF PEPPER IN GIRL'S FACE.
Rang the Door Bell and as Soon as the Door Was Opened Hurled the Pepper in Attendant's Face—Struck the Wrong Woman—Says She Will Repeat Her Act but Get the Right One Next Time.
Saturday night about 9 o'clock a woman rang the door bell of Mrs. May Stone's employment agency at 60 George street. A servant girl in Mrs. Stone's employ attended the door and on opening it she was blinded by having a whole box of red pepper thrown in her face and eyes. The girl screamed and fell on the floor in her agony. Her outcries brought Mrs. Stone to the scene and the woman who had done the throwing ran down the street just as Mrs. Stone arrived, so that she only saw her back as she was fleeing down the street.
Mrs. Stone immediately summoned Dr. Mailhouse to attend the injured girl, in the meanwhile notifying the police.
Detective Daley was sent to the house and he interviewed Mrs. Stone. The only identifying fact she could give him was to describe the height of the woman and how she was clothed. After learning these facts the detective went out looking for her and after a hunt of about two hours he arrested a young girl named Belle Crowell, who answered the description, in a hotel on State street. The girl stoutly denied all knowledge of the affair, but as some of the same kind of pepper was found in her room she was taken to police headquarters and locked up. The simple charge of breach of the peace was lodged against her but the police say that this may be changed to a more serious charge before she appears before the court.
On her arrival at headquarters she stoutly denied all knowledge of the affair, but yesterday morning when examined by Captain Cowles she admitted it and said that she would do the same thing again as soon as she could get out only that Mrs. Stone, for whom it was intended, would get the dose next time.
She said that she bought the pepper on Saturday purposely to throw it into Mrs. Stone's eyes and as Mrs. Stone did not open the door as expected she was very much disappointed. It was kind of dark in the hall at the time so she thought it was Mrs. Stone when she did the throwing. She claims she will make no similar mistake when she has a chance. She gave as her reason for the act that she had been in Mrs. Stone's employ, at one time, as a domestic, and that she had been unjustly discharged. The police have some doubts as to the girl's story and are investigating her case.
Mrs. Stone when interviewed last evening stated that it was an unfortunate affair and that she did not care to discuss it. She said, however, that the injured girl was doing nicely.
