DIKE

Col. Richardson Endeavored to Secure the Seed From the Agricultural Department.

Col. W. P. Richardson, of the Alaska Road Commission, which built the Valdez dike to protect the town and government property from the inroads of the glacier stream, is anxious to sow the embankment with grass seed in the hopes that the matting of grass roots will prevent the washing of the sands when the waters strike it.

In order to secure the most expert advice possible the colonel wrote to Professor C. C. Georgeson and requested his advice and in reply was given a list of 15 seeds which are to be mixed together and will grow a heavy mat of grass roots, as the roots creep.

As the appropriation for the dike is exhausted it is possible that the city will purchase the seeds. Prof. Georgeson says they will cost about $60.00 and that the department does not have them all.

The list is as follows:

Ten pounds Agrostis stolonifera (creeping bent).

Five pounds Agrostis vulgaris (red top).

Five pounds Alopecurus pratensis (meadow foxtail).

Twenty pounds Ammophila arundinacea (beach grass).

Twenty pounds Avena Elatior (tall meadow oat grass).

Twenty pounds Bromus inermis (awnless brome).

Fifteen pounds Cynosurus cristatus (crested dog's tail).

Five pounds Festuca ovina (sheep's fescue).

Five pounds Festuca pratensis (meadow fescue).

Five pounds Festuca rubra (red fescue).

Five pounds Phalaris arundinacea (reed canary grass).

Five pounds Poa compressa (Canada blue grass).

Five pounds Poa nemoralis (wood meadow grass).

Five pounds Poa pratensis (Kentucky blue grass).

Five pounds white clover.

Col. Richardson plans to sow grass seeds on the Valdez dike to stabilize it against erosion from glacier stream waters. He consulted Professor Georgeson, who recommended a mix of 15 types of seeds to create a heavy mat of creeping roots. With funds exhausted, the city may buy the $60 worth of seeds.
