Boston, June 10, 1788.
COMMEMORATIVE ODE,
For the 7th of June 1788,
In honor of the late Major-General
JOSEPH WARREN, Esquire.
Virtus, recludens immeritis mori
Cælum negata tentat iter via,
Cæteraque vulgares, ut udam
Spernit humum fugiente penna. Hor.
In fatal dum fluvii currunt, dum in montibus umbræ
Lustrabunt convexa; polus dum sidera pascet
Tempus honos, nomenque tuum laudeque ma-
nebit.
VIRG.
HARK! the trumpet is blown!
It inspires the brave;
Fleets dance on the wave;
Armies rouse at the tone.
Grim vengeance and slaughter, launch
death's ebon car;
Rage, havock, destruction, embark for the
war;
The thunder cloth'd steeds, snorting light-
ings, and by,
As eagles that poise on the pinions of prey,
They're on stretch for to fly.
And lust of dominion, chides a moment's
delay.
Solemn heralds of fire,
CLINTON. HOWE, and BUR-
GUOYNE,
Leading on the proud line,
Denounce carnage, and fire.
Britannia's dread force, rob'd in garments
of flame,
With banners emblazon'd by glory and fame,
Like tempests of wrath, pour across the wild
deep;
Ambition and conquest, enfevers the train.
Footmen bound--horses leap--
And as fierce rav'ning lions, rush on to
the plain.
Peal on peal loud was driven;
Awful thunders roll'd around,
And Columbia's last bound.
Heard this mandate from Heaven.
" America to arms—march forth—face the
" storm,
" In terrors supernal, envolope thy form.
". The Guardian of Right from his throne
" in the skies,
" Commands, that the falchion shall
"FREEDOM defend.
" Gird for battle! arise!
" And the ceptre of iron, from tyranny
" rend."
MASSACHUSETTS obey'd;
Not Gonfalons unfurl'd,
Which had wav'd o'er the world;
Nor the two edged blade.
Her WARREN could awe:--As the ada-
mand rock,
Whose base rooted strong, scorns the ur-
ges rude shock;
He towered sublime on the top of mount
BREED.
Advance to yon rampart, vindictive aid
GAGE,
HOWE and PIGOT, cried speed,
PITCAIRNE, ABERCROMBIE, impa-
sioned with rage.
Ruin mote down the band.
ATE broke from her cell.
Snatch'd the flambeau of hell,
And charg'd flame in hand.
Determin'd, stern BRUNSWICK's to fulfil,
Fresh legions were form'd at the foot of the
hill;
Impetuous battalions press on—horror mil'd.
EURYMONE's keen shafts, destroying,
thence iped.
And the trenches were pil'd,
With war's ruthless triumphs, mangled limbs
of the dead.
On the life erimson'd vale,
Hardy vet'rans appall'd,
Pride and honour recall'd,
Fatal breast-works to scale.
HOWE rallied the troops--fording rivers
of blood,
The lords of the globe, and the kings of the
Flood
Slow mounted the car. Great WARREN
aroze,
And nerv'd his right arm, in the terrors of
war,
Hurling liberty's foes
With the hand of a Titan, from Fame's tro-
phied car.
Rank on rank fell around:
ABERCROMBIE--storm'd,died,
And the strong purple tide.
Bore PITCAIRNE from the mound.
Pale terror--convulsing affright--and de-
pair--
Shrieks, groans, shouts and cries, intermin-
gled rent air.
Death sharpen'd his scythe--Havock sprang
to the field--
Dire Furies let loose from grim Pluto's a-
bode,
Seized the Gorgon's dread shield,
And with sulphur-dipt torches,avenging they
ftrode.
WARREN, firm as the oak,
Which for 'ages has stood,
Lord supreme of the wood.
Spurn'd the tempest that broke.
Like a herald of glory, who bursts from on
high,
Effulgence celestial beams full from his eye
And horse with irradiance, too splendid for
earth;
WOLFE glow'd at the sight--and pro-
claim'd, " It is done,
"Let the angel of worth
" Crown a second MONTCALM, with
" virtue's bright sun."
In a chariot of day,
To mount BREED's awful height,
URIEL mark'd his flight,
And wrapt WARREN away.
The lyres of Eden harmonius began,
" Thrice welcome, thrice welcome, thrice hail,
" friend to man.
"Archangels who wait on the highest supreme
Pronounce, that the am'rynth unfading is
" thine,
"Pure glory's potles beam,
" And pæans immortal of triumph divin ."
Orders older than time,
With the morning stars sung,
And all paradise rung,
In grand chorus sublime.
Heaven's pearl-fretted arch echo'd anthems
of praise,
WARREN kneel'd at the feet of the ancient
of days;
And sighed for his fellows chas'd over the
plain.
The Omnipotent spoke--strong seraphim
sped,
Clouds encompass a long train,
And the wing of grey eve, as a canopy spread.
: Far beyond the dread field."
Troops fatigued and opprest,
Were conducted to rest,
On the dark pencil'd shield.
Luxurious roll'd forth the torrent of woe:
Humanity, freedom, with sympathy's glow,
Rain'd grief's bitter tears, for the hero belov'd.
Hope rais'd from the dust, sad despondency's
eye,
I . Faith the film had remov'd,
And pointed to WARREN, en thron'd in
the sky.
His mantle was found:
'Kindred spirits well knew,
It had dropt as he flew,
Faithful masters search'd round.
To Solomon's Temple, in silent parade,
This thrice hallow'd relique, the brethren
convey'd.
Imprest by religion with pathos divine,
Full rivers of joy, MORTON pour'd on
the soul,
Light adorn'd ev'ry line.
And wisdom, strength, beauty, high polish'd
the whole.
Fair flowrets bloom sweet;
Mildest zephyrs of spring,
Incense waft on the wing;
Cassia sprinkle the seat.
Let not Comus, nor frisklick, light revels
there keep;
Nor ivy wreath'd Bacchants, appear on the
steep;
Nor a beast of the field--nor a lamb of the
green;
Those sacred libations, that down the bank
flow'd,
Render holy the scene.
And inscribe it, to FREEDOM, to VIR-
TUE and GOD.
