Full Text

A writer in the Baltimore Patriot proposes a Lateral Rail Road to Hagerstown or Western Maryland, "to be commenced at the best point on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, at or near Weverton, Maryland, and from thence up the valley known as Pleasant Valley, to be located on the most desirable route, so as to reach Boonsboro' as nearly as possible; thence to Hagerstown, the most desirable route, so as to connect with the Franklin Railroad to Chambersburg. This project is endorsed and urged in the Patriot on the ground that "at present a large portion of the products of Western Maryland goes to Alexandria, by way of the canal, and is shipped thence either direct to Europe or to the North. The Cumberland valley, or Franklin county products, for want of better and cheaper conveyance, are sent to Philadelphia, and that this new scheme will secure to Baltimore, the trade now sent to Alexandria and Philadelphia. Baltimore is always upon the look out to bring to its doors every thing it can catch.
