Full Text
Shroud the Star Spangled Banner, with cypress and willow;
Let minute guns thunder along the blue deep.
While moaning winds echo the dirge o'er the billows,
A hero has gone whom a nation shall weep.
Freedom points to the action, immortal in story,
Where triumph encircled his naval career.
When Fame wove delight in his mantle of glory,
From the red blood day of the conquered frigate
Be his mourners the crew of the ship he defended,
Let his coffin be carved from old Constitution's spars,
Be his pall her proud ensign, with victory splendid,
His own battle flag of the stripes and the stars.
Place his tomb on a rock by the shore of the ocean-
Halfmast hoist the colors when passing his grave.
So each sailor may pay the sweet tear of devotion
A tribute that honor demands for the brave.
There let him rest, with 'his union around him.'
His wish at life's furlough, to be made anchor so.
Waiting, orders, the angel of death ever found him.
At word of command, always ready, to go
By his tomb shall the goddess of Liberty kneeling-
The light on her seraph face cheerful and dull,
While funeral guns his sad requiem are pealing
Waft aloft on her sighs, the bright banner unfurled
From the Richmond Enquirer.
