Machine Tipped Over and Badly Damaged While Passengers Awaited Improvement in Weather.
[United Press Leased Wire Service.]
DEMING, N. M., Nov. 27. The first attempt of the Loinghead airplane to fly from Santa Barbara, Calif., to Washington, D. C., appeared to have been abandoned today, the machine being badly damaged in overturning near Gila, Ariz., yesterday. Mechanic L. G. Flint, riding with Pilots Meyerhofer and Ferneau was slightly injured.
Aviator Carl Christofferson, who fell ill here while awaiting the plane's arrival, was unable to respond to their wired plea for assistance and directed Ferneau by telegram to obtain aid from Santa Barbara.
Yesterday's accident was the second on the trip which was started from Santa Barbara last Saturday.
A broken rocker arm forced the pilots to descend just after they crossed the Arizona line Sunday, after making repairs, they flew forty miles to Gila where they landed to await a change in the weather. The flyers had encountered bitter cold, sleet and snow. On their attempt to resume the flight Monday the machine was overturned and badly damaged. Ferneau wired Christofferson. The latter expressed the belief that the transcontinental flight may have to be abandoned for the present.
