Alaska Transportation Co. Purchases Passenger Ship G. Washington
SEATTLE, Jan. 8. - (P) - S. J. Swanson, Vice-President and General Manager of the Alaska Transportation Company, announced today that his company has purchased the passenger liner George Washington and will operate the vessel in the Seattle-Southeast Alaska route.
The George Washington, 390 feet in length with accommodations for 250 passengers, has been acquired from the United States Maritime Commission. She formerly was operated by the Alcoa Company between New York and Bermuda as a cruise ship.
Swanson said that bids will be requested from both Atlantic and Pacific Coast shipyards for alterations to the George Washington which will meet the requirements of the Alaska trade.
The vessel is expected to be ready for service between April 15 and May 1. She will be operated primarily as a passenger carrier, only high-class freight and perishables being accepted for her voyages.
