First Grand Concert of the Saengerfest.
The Programme—Mme. Lucca Rapturously Encore—A Chorus of One Thousand Five Hundred Voices.
CLEVELAND, O., June 24.—The weather to-day was cool and pleasant. The number of strangers in the city is larger than at any time during the week. The day was spent by the visitors in sight-seeing, excursions on the lake, etc. This evening the first grand concert of the Saengerfest was given. The attendance was quite large, many people being turned away for want of room. It is estimated that 9,000 spectators were present. The following is the programme: Overture to Leonore No. 3, from Beethoven, by Bergmann's orchestra; Psalm 18th, the heavens proclaim, from Liszt, the North American Saengerbund and Orchestra; My Lay, from Gumbert, by Madame Lucca; the Omnipotence, from Haydn, by Mr. Obel, of Detroit, the North American Saengerbund and Orchestra; the Overture to Tannhauser, from Wagner, by the orchestra; grand scene from the fifth act of L'Africaine from Meyerbeer, by Madame Lucca; the Morning Sun, from Rietz, by the North American Saengerbund; the Mazeppa March, from Liszt, by the orchestra. The music, by Bergmann's orchestra, composed of one hundred pieces, was grand, and elicited enthusiastic applause. Madame Lucca sang superbly, and was rapturously encored. The singing by the chorus of 1,500 voices was excellent, and received its full share of favors from the audience.
