Grange Favors Wage Scale Less Than Usual Pay

Montgomery-Howard Farmers Also Urge Elimination Of Rockville Crossing

The Montgomery-Howard County Pomona Grange has gone on record as favoring a wage scale for relief agencies less than the prevailing wage as ordinarily paid for labor. The group comprises six granges in Montgomery and one in Howard County.

The resolution adopted at the recent meeting also asks that the farmer be given more representation on the welfare boards and that labor be given full-time employment by the various relief agencies. Copies of the resolution were ordered sent to Harry L. Hopkins, Gov. Nice and the welfare boards of the two counties.

The bi-county organization also adopted a resolution urging the immediate elimination of the dangerous railway grade crossing in Rockville.

The meeting was conducted by Lawrence G. Tolson of Colesville, master. The principal speakers included Thomas B. Symons, director of the extension service of the University of Maryland; A. G. Ensor, past master of the Maryland State Grange and Edward Wise, secretary of the Maryland Farm Bureau Federation.

The activity program for the year was approved. It provides for fulfillment by each subordinate grange of the honor grange requirements, and devoting one meeting during the year to study of State, county and national taxation; one meeting to study of the county milk ordinances and one to the study of co-operative marketing; sending by each grange of a boy and a girl to the annual 4-H short course at the University of Maryland and a delegate to the Atlantic States Lecturers' Conference, and submitting all reports to the Pomona Grange in writing.

May 20 was tentatively decided upon as the date for showing grange and Vivian slides in connection with a school of instruction to be held at Rockville.
