Full Text

Lord Cochrane seems destined to become the most famous buccaneer of the day. The petty adventurers of the Atlantic are minnows compared to this great Sea Serpent of the Pacific. He has little scruple as to the "ways and means" of amassing a fortune by the time he returns to England. His plan mentioned in the letters from Valparaiso, of establishing a custom house on the high seas, and plundering vessels of their most valuable effects under the denomination of "duties," reminds us of the pirate Lambro, as described by Lord Byron.

"Let not his mode of raising cash seem strange,
Although he fleeced the flags of every nation;
For into a prime minister but change
His title, and 'tis nothing but taxation!"
