'James,' says the sire, 'did thee receive my letter desiring that thee should not become a soldier?' 'Yea,' replied the hopeful, 'but I could not help it, because all the young men in our neighborhood were joining the army and I was ashamed to be behind!' 'Has thee been sworn in,' responded the father. 'I have,' replied the son. 'Well then,' says the old man, 'if that is the case, all I have to say is, that thee must never be guilty of turning thy back upon the enemy.'
It is also said that the parent, in conversation with some of the officers, deprecated the idea of taking prisoners in this contest with a lot of rebels, on account of the process being so decidedly embarrassing and inconvenient; It perhaps, in this, we may not be so well informed. One thing is certain, and that is, if the son of a Quaker manages to get into the army and the obligation to serve has been taken, a sense of propriety respecting the sanctity of words uttered under the influence of the law, seems to prevail over every other sentiment.
