Rutland, July 16.—The worst wind, rain and electric storm in this section this year broke over the city about 12:30 yesterday afternoon and during it the small pox isolation hospital east of the city was almost demolished.
The storm continued to rage for about 30 minutes, and did hundreds of dollars worth of damage to the gardens and meadows in this vicinity.
The isolation hospital which was destroyed consisted of two temporary cell structures built a few weeks ago by Fred Smith. When the blast struck the male ward, Lynn Brigham a small pox patient saw the door twist and he started to hold it in place, calling the nurse to assist him. Both men an instant later saw that the building was about to leave its foundation and they jumped outside just as the structure was lifted into the air and hurled some 40 feet to the east.
The men ran to the female ward where another patient, Miss Valene La Mountain was with her mother and got them out and into the old isolation hospital a few feet away which withstood the storm.
The female ward was not turned over as a big rock in the rear held it in place. When the main ward struck the ground it collapsed like an egg shell and all the new iron beds, stands and other modern hospital furnishings with which it had just been equipped were smashed.
