OPENING OF THE NEW ORGAN. Mr. S. S. Hamill, who has superintended the erection and tuning of the Organ built by Messrs. Simmons and Wilcox of Boston, for the Hanover Street Society, completed his work Saturday, and the organ was exhibited Saturday evening, under the direction of Mr. E. T. Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin commencing, was followed successively by Messrs. Tasker, LeMudge, H. Milton Smith, and Geo. Epps; other organists were present but declined playing.
This instrument is one of the finest in this city. The dimensions are as follows: 20 ft. high, 14 ft. wide, and 10 ft. deep. The case is in Grecian style of architecture, grained in imitation of oak, with gilded front pipes. It has two banks of keys and thirty-one registers, seven of which are mechanical, and twenty-four speaking stops, with a total of nearly sixteen hundred pipes. The swell is unusually large, the compass being from CC to G in alt, or in other words, the entire compass of the Key-board.
This organ contains some new stops never before introduced here; among which are the German Viola di Gamba, and the Harmonic Flute. The former is of a remarkably stringy, pungent quality of tone, resembling the real Violoncello; this is a favorite stop with the Germans, and the builders of this organ are the only ones who make them in this country.
The Harmonic Flute is a beautiful solo stop, bright, clear and mellow, and the best imitation of the Flute we have ever heard. Of the other stops we have not space to particularize, but suffice it to say, that the Diapasons, the Chorus, the Reeds and Pedals, are each and all very fine, and the power and brilliancy of the full organ really grand.
We congratulate the Society in the possession of this fine instrument, and hope it will be the means of giving the builders other organs in this city and vicinity.
