Senator King

Senator King of Utah visited St. Croix yesterday. The Senator will be remembered for his great interest in the Virgin Islands and his work in connection with the framing of our present organic act which displaced the Act of March 1917 setting up a temporary form of government for the Virgin Islands.

He arrived here by plane, motored to Frederiksted where he delivered an address and from 3 to 3:45 P. M. received such persons as requested private interviews.

At 4 in the afternoon the Senator attended an informal meeting of the Colonial Council. The Chairman, Dr. Canegata delivered the speech of welcome.

Then it was that those present were given a great treat from the Senator's storehouse of knowledge.

In excellent English he poured out his wealth of words, going back to ancient, then modern history and down to the present trend of the world's affairs, making comparisons and comments. He spoke of his interest in Greece because of the contribution she gave to the world in art and literature. He touched on the new and terrible forms of government being set up in different parts of the world and he commented on conditions in the United States.

Senator King struck a vibrant note when he explained that it was not the number of bills that a legislature passes but the number of objectionable ones that it stops from passing which demonstrates the intelligence of the legislators.

A few of the members spoke briefly, commending the Senator for his kind words, after which the Chairman adjourned the meeting.
