Baggage Thieves.

A number of complaints have been made to us of the loss of baggage, and in some instances of the abstraction from valises of articles while in the baggage cars, between this place and Chicago. A gentleman of our acquaintance, while on a trip recently to the East, had an elegant gold-mounted pipe, valued at $50; a bag containing a valuable collection of rare antique and foreign coins, and some wearing apparel, abstracted from his valise. There is evidently a class of petty thieves, who make a living by plundering travelers between Elko and Chicago, who make a success of their vocation, either with or without collusion with the baggage-masters. Who is it, and can it be remedied? It is to be hoped, for the reputation of the railroad companies, that the proper officers will inaugurate some method by which passengers may be relieved of this annoyance, and may in future feel free from care in regard to their baggage when placed in charge of the proper employees of the different roads.
