Mr. Platt, who pleaded guilty to an assault on Mr. Everett at Washington Hall, appeared to receive judgment. The Recorder observed, that he was sorry to see Mr. P. in that situation—having violated the laws of his country. No doubt the aggravation in the article contained in the North American Review, against his father, though he knew not that Mr. Everett was the author, was considered and so indeed was the assault on Mr. E, a gentleman of high character, from Boston. Mr. P. begged to know, whether, from the peculiar emphasis laid upon the word Boston, it was meant as an aggravation of punishment, because Mr. E. was from that place. The Recorder replied he meant that he was a stranger. Mr. Everett had been degraded by a blow, and was now even in that situation. The Court had received Mr. P's affidavit, stating his ignorance of Mr. E. being a clergyman. Mr. Platt begged, before the judgment of the court was pronounced, to say a few words. He did not wish the idea to go abroad, that if he had offended the majesty of the law, he had directly or indirectly, sought for a mitigation; if he had deserved punishment, let the axe fall. The sentence of the court was a fine of $250.
