Win Honors In Music Festival
Competing with three hundred and twenty-five students from Ashe, Avery and Watauga county schools, Nathan's Creek high school won second place and West Jefferson third, in the fifth annual harvest festival of music at A. S. T. C., last week. First place was won by Boone.
The event was sponsored by the music department of Appalachian State Teachers College and was under the chairmanship of Virginia Wray, who had the assistance of both college and demonstration school faculties as well as the music department of Lees-McRae College of Banner Elk.
Instead of first and second-place positions, rating was accorded on merit of performance with figures one and two given to denote good and excellent. With O. M. Hartsell as the director, Boone received excellent rating on vocal trio, boys' quartet, soprano solo by Josephine Miller, and advanced piano solo by Charles Boone, and second honor rating on mixed chorus, girls' choruses, soprano by Betty Winkler and alto by Betty Webster.
Nathan's Creek came second with one excellent and second honor ratings on tenor solo, baritone solo and bass vocal trio and soprano solo, and West Jefferson rated three second honor ratings on vocal duet, vocal trio and soprano solo. Crossnore took a second honor rating on girls' choruses.
The three Ashe schools taking part in the event included Nathan's Creek, Lois Dixon, director; West Jefferson, Margaret Phillips, director; Fleetwood, Hortense Vaught, director.
