OLD TRIM'S DISSERTATIONS.
DONGOLA, Sept. 25, 1882.
If England-as history proves-has had seven hundred years of the most stringent protective tariff the world ever saw and has had but thirty-four years of free trade is it not preposterous for Mr. Hurd and others to assert that this thirty-four years of relative free trade has given her the position of manufacture for the world?
Much is now being said and written in favor of "Free Trade," nine-tenths of which is the thinnest kind of "Tom Foolery."
We are living in an age in which men jump at and hitch on to the wildest conclusion without ever taking thought about what will be the results. But we are not going to write an article on the tariff, we hope the commission will arrange the matter so as to give us plenty of revenue. In Union county we are warming up politically, and those who are candidates are looking up their strength and getting their special friends to buckle on their armor and pitch into fight with a "vim." One "Bright Alex"of the pill-bag persuasion, who is a mighty champion for the ring, takes the ground that no man who is in debt should be promoted to office. The writer don't know whether this champion of the ring candidate had loaned to Elijah or not.
Be that as it may, this champion seems to be very fearful of men who are in debt or occasionally take a glass of beer, yet there is not a man in town that guzzles more "forty rod" whisky than he, and, as for his being out of debt, there is a mighty good reason; but we leave the reader to guess that, for it is generally best to not hint things too close. This champion's side of the fight will come up hors de combat in the end.
Now it comes to pass that we have another man before us, asking us to support him for the office of county judge. Let me see! One, two, three, four, five, six, yes "six" is the number, and, of course, the one who owes no man will be championed by the "Bright Alex," the man of the pill-bag persuasion. We expect when we write again to be able to report another one in the race. We once, upon a time, told Old Mr. --- that 'Squire Jesse was going to sue him for a settlement.
The old gentleman replied: "Tush! there has been no prism served on me. I and Squire Jesse used to be at a very good recompensiblearity, but now there is smart of a disembargue." A political party in Union county that was once at a good "re-compensiblerarity" have up a "nawful" "disembargue," but then it is a curious wind that blows good to no one. For a few months our shops where men and boys go to enjoy their personal rights and our candidates to buy votes will enjoy a prosperity heretofore unprecedented. Think of six candidates running for the same office, bearing in mind that whisky puts too many votes in the box and you will understand what we mean by "shops where men and boys go to enjoy their personal rights."
The time for putting in the wheat crop is here, and our hardy sons of the soil are improving the time. All the farmers will sow largely, and when they get their returns in the"white whelps"—"dollars of our daddies"-do you think they will put them in the bank? No, they will take them to Eddleman Bros' store, buy their sugar and coffee and yellow molasses, quit the foolish practice of selling'all the eggs and butter; to buy these things, learn to eat them and steer clear of banks. Then living will be good, and faces now as long as a threshing machine will soon shorten up. Try it ye bank depositors.
