It affords us a great deal of pleasure to be able to state that on yesterday evening the 17th inst., the ladies had collected over $300 to send to the Howard Association to aid in relief of the indigent and distressed population of New Orleans.
At our suggestion in an article on the subject of Relief the other day, the following gentlemen have come forward and placed their names on our table as a committee of relief--ready and willing to embark at any hour to aid in ministering with their own hands such assistance and relief as they can under the direction of the Howard Association. We give their names: C. Chenett, Robt. M. Tessier, Asher J. Phillips, Charles Muller, W. B. Gilbert and P. A. Fetherston.
In this body of young and able men we see two or three who were volunteers in the late war and are accustomed to danger. In the Hospital at Vera Cruz when the same epidemic was so fatal, they were there to see the disease in all its phases. Acting in concert now at New Orleans under the direction of the "Howard Association," they can be more useful than any amount of dollars that could be transmitted. It will speak more for the substantial philanthropy of this place to send them than anything else could.
We would suggest to the ladies that the services of this band be secured, and their communications for the "Howard Association" be entrusted to them. If they will have a meeting at once and pass a resolution to that effect, we will call on the young gentlemen above mentioned to hold themselves in readiness.
