Promise and Fulfilment
The election is over. Voters have made their decision.
It remains now for the successful candidates, the new governor, Secretary of State, the legislators, to follow through on election promises; to get at the business at hand.
The men whom we have selected to guide the destinies of our new state will have a profound effect upon our daily lives for the years to come. They will decide how best to set up the executive and legislative structure of our state government within the framework of the constitution. They will decide the type and quality of our schools, of our roads and transportation facilities; they will determine how best to exploit our natural resources for the best development of this great land.
They will have to determine how best to furnish the essential services required of a state government, and yet keep the tax load down—for taxes can stifle our very existence. We would like to admonish our legislators to look with a jaundiced eye at many of the bills submitted as "necessary." The tax rate must be kept down consistent with good government.
Low-cost power development is of paramount importance in the development of Alaska. Low cost utilities are the big factors in attracting industries and people. New industries, in turn, will affect transportation costs—for a south-bound payload will lower freight costs. It may, in time, bring passenger service to Alaska again.
The men we choose will have to grapple with these problems. It is evident that they have been entrusted with great responsibilities.
May they measure up to them.
