Suspect Papa Dee as Union-Buster

Union busting activities at the Detroit Michigan Stove Co., 6900 E. Jefferson resulted in the arrest of at least ten persons in the past several days, including the colorful figure known as Papa Dee.

Charges and counter charges by officials of the company and representatives of the UAW CIO were as "hot as a stove" this week with the prosecutor's office yet seeking additional men accused of attempting to either bribe, frighten or beat up employees of the company.

Arrested in the alleged conspiracy so far are Harry (Papa Dee) Johnson, 2017 Hastings, Gustino Orlando, 4303 Bedford, Grosse Pointe. Sam Evola and Peter Puadino all of whom were released on $100 bonds.

In Custody

Held in protective custody by Detroit police are Will Porter, 30, 1792 Delaware. Will Warfield, 27, 4113 18th E. John W King, also of the Delaware address, a junk car dealer.

Coordinator also informed that pickets and daily negotiations would continue until a contract is agreed upon.

The Kefauver Committee interrogation of several Detroitites, including Petrone, uncovered many beating and anti-union attempts at the stove company and other plants in the area.

A grand investigation several years ago failed to clean up the numerous beatings and anti-union activities at the plant.
