New York, June 13.—Lawrence Stearns, an invalid who lives on Jefferson avenue, Elizabeth, N. J., died to-day from the effects of over-exertion yesterday, when he saved his mother from burning to death.
The young man was dangerously ill with bronchial pneumonia and the doctors attending him declared that his life could only be saved by careful nursing. Yesterday, while his mother was burning some disinfectant, her clothes caught fire. She screamed piteously for assistance and her son hearing her cries sprang, sick as he was, from the bed and rushing to her side seized a quilt with which he enveloped her body and smothered the flames.
Mrs. Stearns was severely burned and is confined to her room. Her devoted son's exertions to save her life brought on a relapse from which he failed to rally. His mother has not been informed of the sad event and it is feared the shock will prove fatal to her.
