Caution Advised Farmers Ergot Is Present
This year growing conditions seem to favor the development of Ergot in small grains. When any grain containing Ergot or forage grasses are fed to livestock, it is well to be alert for any undesirable effects which may result from feeding foodstuffs infected with this fungus growth. Ergot is a fungus growth that attacks rye, barley, wheat, and oats. It also occurs in the native grasses and is an organism that is widespread and survives from year to year regardless of weather conditions.

A cool, moist growing season favors the development of Ergot. Ergot is a fungus which infects the flowering portion of the plant and develops as a hard dark purplish mass much longer than the natural kernel.

Ergot is especially dangerous when fed to sows that will farrow. As little as 1/10th of one percent in feed grain will cause death losses in baby pigs and of under development in the sow. Dairymen report that there is a decline in milk production when cows are fed grain containing Ergot. If at all possible, feeding of Ergotty feed should be avoided for dairy cows and pregnant animals. More information on Ergot may be obtained in Extension Circular 201. Copies may be obtained from Extension office.
