Thirteen fishing vessels, said to have been taking salmon in Puget Sound between Ballard and Rolling Bay, were raided by state and federal officials last Friday morning. Five men were arrested and five vessels, gear, nets and other equipment valued at $25,000 were seized. Warrants charging the five men with being aliens unlawfully engaged in taking food fish were issued by Deputy Prosecutor Cordelia M. Thiel, preparatory to the filing of formal complaints in Justice John B. Wright's court. The men, held in the county jail, are Paul Pappas, Spyros Karocianis, Gust Nakis. Nick Marolo and George Deligam.

Boarded One by One
Under cover of fog the raiding party, aboard the State Fisheries Department patrol boat Elisha P. Ferry, commanded by Capt. Sam Wellington, quietly overhauled the fishing craft one by one and boarded them. In the party were J. W. Mack, State Fisheries Department inspector, and Frank G. Pugsley, United States naturalization inspector. All of the fishing boats, they reported, were operated by American-born or naturalized citizens, and most of them also were manned by American crews. The Americans were released after investigation. Only boats on which there was found a suspected alien were seized. All the boats had gill nets out, according to Mack, when the raiders appeared.

Three Prisoners Protest
Three of the prisoners Pappas, Karocianis and Nakis are said to have protested that they had applied for citizenship, but a cursory investigation of naturalization records, Pugsley said, showed no such applications. The vessels seized, and their owners, according to the officers, are Minerva, owner George Pappas; the Peaton, owner Denny Kourukoumelis; the Athens, owner Daniel Kourukoumelis; the 162-CA, owner Spyros Sofikilis, and the Evangelina, owner A. Angelos Maveros. The boats range in value from $1,500 to $4,500, the officers said and are equipped with gear, including nets, valued at $500 to $1,000 each.
