RICHMOND, Va. (ANP) The week of Sept. 4-10 will be "Martinsville Seven" week in Virginia, the Virginia State Conference of NAACP branches declared last week. During this time the NAACP will conduct a concentrated drive to raise $5,000 to aid in the defense of seven men now sentenced to die.
W. Lester Banks, executive secretary of the state NAACP, says the money is needed to help cover past expenses plus future costs of appeals for the seven men. He said the NAACP does not believe that these men received a fair trial, and it is interested in seeing that they have a retrial.
The question of whether the men are guilty or not the important one, he said, the big fight is to see that they get an honest trial in court.
The Martinsville Seven Defense fund committee will handle the money raised during the campaign. All contributions should be sent to W. Lester Banks, executive secretary, Virginia State conference, 404 1-2 N. Second st. Richmond, Va.
Checks and money orders should be made payable to the Virginia State Conference- NAACP.
