A French officer in St. Maloes reports the English fleet's unexpected failed operation: burning 15-20 old ships and their 15,000 entrenched troops repelled by 700-800 Frenchmen, forcing re-embarkation while the fleet lingers in Bay of Cancale awaiting wind or orders.

I am sorry, Sir, I have deferred so long writing to you, but the little Joke the English have here played themselves and us with, has made me so busy, that I had not a Moment to spare. We little expected that the Design of their prodigious Armament was to burn between 15 and 20 old, crazy Ship bottoms, and that 15,000 Men entrenched up to the Teeth, in an inexpugnable Post, and who had made all the Preparations of a Siege, should suffer themselves to be driven away by 7 or 800 Men. They re-embarked within these 3 Days, but their Fleet is still in the Bay of Cancale. We know not yet whether it waits for a Wind to attempt some other Expedition on the Coasts of the Ocean, or for Orders from England. I hope that either one or the other will soon arrive, that we may see ourselves rid of them.
