SALEM. September 29.
BRITISH FORCES IN CANADA.

Previous to the declaration of war, the Peace establishment in the British Provinces, was as follows: four companies Royal Artillery, commanded by Major General George Glasgow; a company of Royal Engineers, under the command of Lieut. Col. R. H. Bruyeres; town A at Veteran Battalion, consisting of ten companies, under command of Lieutenant Colonel H. Jouch: first Battalion eighth (or King's) regiment, consisting of ten companies, under Lt. Gen. Drummond and Colonel R. Young ; forty first regiment of foot, 12 companies, Colonel H. Proctor : forty-ninth (Hertfordshire) regiment 12 companies, under Major General I. Brock, Major Gen. R. H. Sheaffe. (formerly of Boston) and colonel J. Vincent, hundredth regiment of foot 10 companies, under Lieutenant Colonel Mal. Macpherson ; Royal Newfoundland regiment, 10 companies under Lt. Gen. J. Skerrett : Canadian Fencible Infantry. 10 companies under Major Gen. D. Shank.—The above mentioned are the regular troops serving in Canada. In Nova Scotia, are a battalion of Royal Artillery. 8 companies; 2 companies of Royal Engineers: 6 companies of the eighth regiment of foot. 6 companies of Ninety Eighth; the 99th regiment: the 104th regiment under major Hunter : And at Newfoundland, the Nova Scotia F. Infantry, under colonel E. Baynes, who has lately been serving with Sir Geo. Prevost.

The Canadian militia is officered, if not disciplined, and is arranged in 30 divisions : the district of Quebec contains 8 divisions : district of Trois Riveres. 2 divisions, Eastern Townships, 6 divisions : district of Montreal. 18 divisions: and the district of Gaspe, 1 division. These 30 divisions are composed of about 470 companies, chiefly of foot: and the whole number of men enrolled probably amounts to about 30,000.

The London papers mention that a regiment is ordered from Barbadoes, and another from England for Halifax.
