JUNEAU (AP) -- The 82 officers and men of the 1st and 2nd Eskimo Scout Battalions who will represent Alaska in Kennedy's Inaugural Parade Jan. 20 will start east Sunday, Gov. Egan said Thursday.
The 82 Eskimo Scouts will depart Elmendorf Air Force Base in two Alaska Air National Guard C-123 transport planes.
After overnight stops at McChord Air Force Base, Wash., and Offut Air Force Base, Kan., they are scheduled to arrive at Anacostia Naval Air Station, Washington, D. C.., next Tuesday.
For many of the Scouts, the trip will be the first time they have ever been away from the immediate area of their villages.
Wearing all-white parkas and trousers, the Eskimo Scouts will join the Elmendorf AFB band and Gov. Egan in the Alaska section of the parade. The Scouts leave Washington for Alaska on Jan. 21.
The Eskimo units will include the 40 members of Company D of the 1st Scout Battalion, 297th Infantry, Barrow Unit. and a 40-man platoon composed of members of the 2nd Scout Battalion from 17 villages along the Kuskokwim River and Bering Sea.
The Barrow Scouts will be commanded by 1st Lt. Eben Hopson, a member of the Alaska State Senate. The second platoon will be under the command of 2nd Lt. William Hately of Bethel.
