Extract of a Letter from a Gentleman in England, to his Friend in this Town, (which came by the Harriot Packet lately arrived at New York,) dated Sept. 8, 1758.
Wrote you of the Success of our Expeditions in the Destruction of St. Maloes, the taking and burning about 100 Vessels; also, the taking and dismantling of Cherbourg, destroying the Basin, blowing up the Fortifications, filling their Ships with the Ruins and Sinking them in the Basin and Harbour, so that the Sea making a free Passage in, will fill them with Sand, and the Harbour will be entirely ruined for great Ships, which they had been 20 Years preparing for a second Dunkirk; the 24 Pieces of Cannon and Mortars, which were of Brass, being brought Home. (the Iron they destroyed and sunk) were this Morning carried to his Majesty, and after continuing there a few Days, are to be escorted thro' the City by the Horse and Foot Guards, drawn by 235 Horses, and then to be deposited in the Tower. -- I also acquainted you with the brave Stand the Hessians made against the superior Number of the French, and, after being over-born, leaving the French a dear bought Field of Battle. -- Also, of General Imhoff's Victory over another Body of French, which were posted to prevent the Junction of the British Troops with Prince Ferdinand, which is now happily effected. - But alas! the poor King of Prussia could not keep Possession of Moravia; therefore returned back to Silesia, with Count Daun at his Heels; the Russians 70,000 strong in his Front, and the mean-spirited Swedes on one Flank; which critical Situation has drawn the anxious Attention of the Well-Wishers of the Protestant Cause; for the Design of the Popish Confederacy was thus, at once to fall on him in Front and Flanks: To secure which Event, the Russians had strongly entrenched themselves, tho' near double the Number of the Prussians, until their Armies in the Flank were properly advanced; but according to GOD's former Dealings with the King of Prussia, just as Rome and Hell were ready to close their yawning Jaws, and at once crush the Protestant Cause, GOD again appears! And when He appears, his Enemies shall be scattered before the Wind: -- Thus it was here: -- Before the Design was ripe, the King of Prussia attacks the Russians in their Intrenchments; and after a whole Day's Engagement gains a compleat Victory; took 100 Pieces of Cannon, their Military Chest; and when the Russians fled, they left 17,000 Men on the Field of Battle: This News occasioned universal Joy. -- But behold, the Affair was not over! -- When the Russians retreated they formed themselves into a Square, in which they rallied, and the Prussians had their Work to do over again; but after repeated Engagements for three Days successively, the Russians were totally routed; and 'tis said not a Regiment left together.
When they were broke the King of Prussia paus'd about a Minute, and then said, He did not know any Business they had in that Country: -- Which the Officers took for a Hint to give no Quarter. -- That the Slaughter has been prodigious: General Fermer, General Brown, and most of their General Officers are cut off, and their Cannon on the second Entrenchments taken. -- Further to embarrass the poor King: Count Daun sent a Detachment to attack his Flanks; but he had timely Intelligence of their Motion, and ordered a Party to relieve them; and there obtained another Victory. -- The City was full of this News Yesterday. - Can only add, that private Letters say, the slain are above 40,000, -- their Military Chest contained about L.200,000 Sterling; and that the Poles have broke down the Bridges to prevent their Return to Russia: That in all Probability, this Army of 70,000 Men, will be entirely cut off: -- A surprising Turn in Providence! -- I am informed to Day, That by the Convention between Russia and France, it was Stipulated, that besides the Subsidies, the French were to allow the Russians 5 l. Sterling for every Man killed in the Expedition: Judge then how much this must affect the French Finances to have 300,000 l. Sterling to pay on this Occasion! - We may say again, what has GOD wrought! -
It is further said, That the second Day when the Russians had formed themselves into a hollow Square, the Prussian Soldiers refus'd to engage the second Time, as they had gained a compleat Victory, and tho't they might make a secure Retreat: Upon which the King said, Then I'm undone: And snatching a Standard from one of the Men, rode forward to the Enemy, stuck it in the Ground, and said, Here will I die! - Whereupon his whole Army rush'd forward, gave three Shouts, and fell on like Madmen, and tore the Russians all to Pieces. - We rejoice at the taking of Cape Breton; and hope we shall drive every French Man out of America. -- The King has ordered a Form of Thanksgiving to be used in all the Churches of London for the Taking of Louisbourg. - After a grand Parade, the French Colours were this Week hung up in St. Paul's, as a Pledge to the City of the Vigour of our Troops. - More Troops are embarking, I believe for New York.
