Full Text

Lincoln and Douglas.
These competitors for the Illinois Senator-ship have arranged for joint discussions at Ottawa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charleston, Galesburg, Quincy, and Alton. It is agreed that they shall alternately open and close the discussions, the first speaker to occupy an hour, the next an hour and a half, then the first to close in half an hour.
The contest in Illinois is very animated—Judge Douglas is constantly speaking, and generally to large audiences. Mr. Lincoln is not idle, and also has full meetings. Senator Trumbull is laboring vigorously; Mr. Lovejoy and other wide-awake Republicans are busy canvassing.
The following papers in Illinois now support the Administration, and oppose the re-election of Douglas:—Chicago Herald, Peoria Union, Fulton City Advertiser, Joliet Signal, Springfield State Democrat, Bureau County Democrat, Putnam County Democrat, Jonesboro Gazette, Cairo Times, Clinton County Democrat, and the Belleville Star of Egypt. The Clinton Democrat has lately gone over to the Buchananites, and it says the Buchanan men outnumber the Douglasites in De Witt, and that Col. (Douglasite) was only nominated for the Legislature on giving a written pledge not to vote for Douglas for Senator.
