Tornado in France. On looking over the files of French papers received by the last arrival, we find that France has been visited by hurricanes and tornadoes during the past summer, even more terrible and disastrous than those which have been so unusually frequent in this country. Letters from Angouleme, dated the 29th July, mention that a furious hurricane, which passed over that department on the 25th of that month, had caused, in a great number of communes, the most frightful ravages. Not only the crops of grain and grapes, which had promised to be uncommonly abundant, were entirely destroyed, but woods had been laid prostrate and houses blown down, and many of the farmers and laborers left entirely destitute. Nor was the destruction confined merely to property and the productions of the earth—several persons had lost their lives. Two young girls, who were together in a mill were buried under its ruins, parts of which were swept away by a torrent, formed by a sudden deluge of rain. In the commune of Perignac, a landholder, having gone out to look at his estate after the hurricane, and observing the ravages it had occasioned, killed himself in a fit of despair.
