RICHMOND, Va (ANP) School officials in Gloucester county laid plans here last week to make all possible efforts to equalize school facilities for Negro and white children. The move was decided upon following Federal Judge Sterling Hutcheson's citation of the officials for contempt of court in failing to equalize the schools.
According to Stanley T Grey, school board chairman, the board would take "every possible step toward equalization of the Negro and white schools However, he stated it is a known fact that there is nothing in our power that would enable us to actually equalize them by April"
Judge Hutcheson had withheld imposition of sentence for contempt until April His power to punish for contempt is limited only by his own discretion.
Involved in the decision, handed down Wednesday, are Grey, two other board members and J. Walter Kenney, division superintendent.
Gray revealed that an architect had been employed to prepare plans for new school buildings for both Negro and white pupils. Funds for the buildings are to be secured on a bond issue.
Meanwhile Surry county school officials are faced with a similar situation. They are to appear before Judge Hutcheson Monday, January 17, to show cause why they should not be held in contempt of court for failure to equalize Negro and white schools.
