Needed Fund; 'Do Job Up Brown,' Says Stevens; $3,000 Total Urged.

With the pledging to date of $540 for the growing library fund started by the bequest of $1,000 by Ed Smith, an excellent start has been made toward the $2,000 goal proposed by the Age as a more suitable goal than the $1,000 required by the $1,000 provision of the will of the deceased library board member.

"Certainly we can and should match Ed's $1,000 with $2,000 instead of $1,000," said Frank A. Stevens, of the library board, this morning.

"The job may as well be done up right while we are at it. Many more reference books and much more juvenile literature are needed. We now receive $75 a month from the city, out of which we pay our librarian, Mrs. Luetta Gill, $60 a month, leaving but $25 for light, heat, upkeep and the buying of new books."

Many Needs

"The library hours, now 3 to 5 and 7 to 8:30, should be longer. We need more shelving. We should keep up on current new books and literature. All of this takes money. The teachers submit lists sometimes, but we have not the money to spend, so the library virtually stands still."

When the first thousand is completed by subscription, the drive for the second thousand will be in order. Those who have contributed thus far are as follows:
