SEOUL, Feb. 18. (INS)-Tank led Allied troops struck at the Communists on Korea's central front today and waged a heavy battle in an area where the Chinese had seized an advance United Nations position last night.

After nearly five hours of the hardest fighting in that sector in more than a month, the UN raiding party fell back to its own lines, leaving a number of enemy defenses smashed up.

Far to the north, meanwhile, American sabre jet pilots sighted 300 Russian type MIG-15s over two areas of northwest Korea Monday morning.

One group of the F-86 flyers spotted 175 Red jets and engaged 50 of them in battle. No hits on the enemy speedsters were claimed.

Another sabre group reported sighting 125 MIGS but the American pilots were unable to get the elusive Red flyers to fight.

The renewed air encounters followed two Sunday jet battles in which five MIGS were destroyed or damaged by sabre pilots.

In the frozen, rocky hills of central North Korea, a strong force of UN infantrymen, closely supported by tanks and intensive artillery barrages, jumped off at dawn to raid the Chinese lines east of the upper Pukhan river.

The Allied soldiers quickly bumped into powerful resistance and became locked in bitter fighting until a half hour after noon.

A steady drum fire of UN artillery and tank shells battered the enemy positions but was answered by equally heavy Chinese mortar and artillery shelling.

The Allied raiding force disengaged itself early in the afternoon and pulled back from its mission of knocking out Red bunkers and other defenses.

The battle was fought in an area where two Chinese companies pushed Allied troops off an advance hill position two hours after darkness Sunday night.

The Reds pounded the UN position with 150 rounds of mortar and artillery fire within 30 minutes. Then the enemy infantry charged up the hill shortly after 7 p. m.

Although the Allied defenders called in their own artillery, they were forced to abandon the crest at 8:30 p. m.
