tells the following affecting

Incident:

"Yesterday I was talking

with an elderly

gentleman in regard to this war. I asked

him to tell me candidly what he thought

of the Yankees. 'Sir,' said he, 'I hail them

as deliverers from one of the most damnably despotic

governments that ever disgraced the page of history. For twelve

long, weary months we have been forced

to do just as our rulers pleased, and woe

be to him who demurred at anything he

was forced to do. Any change, even death

itself, is far preferable to the way and manner in which I and my fellow-townsmen

have passed the last year; and when I saw

the old flag, last Sunday, again floating

over the home of my boyhood, my heart

swelled, and I could only exclaim, 'Thank

God that I have lived to see this day!'

This is what the old gentleman said,

word for word, as nearly as I could recollect.

And while he finished, the tears rolled down

his aged cheeks. After he got a little composed I asked if any of his relatives were

in the confederate army. Mark what he

said. 'I had two noble, manly boys as

ever gladdened a fond father's eye. Two

months ago, when the conscription bill

was put in such force here, they were totally

dragged out of their beds and

marched in company with many others to

what was termed a school of instruction.

Three days after they were drafted into one

of the C.S. regiments in front of Richmond.

Since then I have heard nothing of them.

They

will never fire a gun against a countryman, for I told them not to, and they

never disobey their father.'
