KRUSE
LOOKS
INTO
COMPLAINTS
OF BEET GROWERS

State
Commissioner of Agri-
culture
Inspects Methods
Used by
Processors in Com-
puting Tares and Dockage
Of Growers Beets.

Returning from a 10-day trip during
which he inspected particularly the
methods employed by the sugar com-
paies in arriving at tare and dock-
age deducted from the beets grown in
various sections of the state, Commis-
sioner of Agriculture Albert H. Kruse
reports that while the complaints of
growers are in the main, justified,
solutions may be found to the difficul-
ties which may remove them to the
satisfaction of all concerned.

Mr. Kruse has released to The
Voice, the following statement of his
findings:

Three of the five sugar companies
in the state have started taking sam-
ples of sugar beets into a central tar-
ing station at the factory. To mini-
mize the moisture loss one uses a
rubber lined bag and the others a
parafin treated bag.

Two companies using the central
taring station method of working the
samples installed power driven steel
brushes to clean the beets. The farm-
ers objected to the power driven
brush in one district, on account of it
being too ·severe.

It not only re-
moved the dirt but also some of the
sugar beet.

At this factory the
brushes were removed and the beets
were cleaned with the old method of
brushing by hand. At the other fac-
tory, using power driven steel brushes
after the growers objected to their
use, the company reduced their speed
from 600 to 150 revolutions per min-
ute.

The other two companies determine
the tare at the receiving stations.
Top tare as taken by the majority
of the companies, especially of beets
under 41/ inches in diameter. is not
meeting with the approval of the
growers.

Tare scales is another item that is
causing dissatisfaction. One company
is using a light scale, known as a
dairy scale, to weigh samples but an-
other has obtained and is using the
very latest type of scale with a built-
in device by which the operator by
pressing a button, can cause to be
printed on the ticket accompanying
the sample, the exact weight to the
ounce.

I believe that all the problems in
regard to top tare and dockage, now
existing, can be worked out by taking
all the good features inaugurated re-
cently at the different factories and
putting in practice some new methods.
