FREE TRADE MEETING. The rain on Saturday evening prevented the assembling of as large an audience at the Court House as would otherwise have attended the Lecture on Free Trade by Mr. Lloyd, of New York. As it was, about one hundred persons were present, among them some of our most prominent manufacturers. Mr. Lloyd spoke about an hour and a half, but we are unable to present even such a synopsis of his remarks as would do him justice, owing to the fact that we heard only the closing portion of his address. Towards the close, some questions were asked him by Mr. S. Woodward. of Bailey, Woodward & Co., and by Mr. W.L. Hearn, of Dewey. Vance & Co., and a sort of triangular running debate was kept up for half an hour or more. After Mr. Lloyd had concluded his address, Mr. Hearn spoke of the disparity of wages received by laborers in the iron mills in Scotland and Wales and those paid for the same work here, and read a statement of the actual wages now paid in those countries. After he had concluded, the audience dispersed. but the debate continued until the parties separated on the street. Mr. Lloyd's speech is said to have presented some very forcible arguments to show that for all classes, laborer and manufacturer. consumer and producer alike, the free trade, system would be more beneficial than the protective tariffs of the present day
