Good Measures
OKLAHOMA CITY
Many measures favorable to labor were passed by the 24th Oklahoma Legislature, which recently ended the current session.
Some unfavorable measures were defeated, as well, reports Harlan Bell, state representative. Included among the defeated measures were several which threatened the Legal Aid Department and a Millionaire's Tax Amendment bill.
"In the many sessions of the Oklahoma Legislature," says Bell, "the Senate has always been the dominating chamber, but in this session, Speaker Jim Nance, a veteran of many years in the Senate and House, has brought the House to the equal of the Senate."
One of Nance's moves was to name R. W. Vandiver, Lodge 427, and formerly secretary of the BRT State Legislative Board, chairman of the Labor Committee.
Following is a partial "box score" of the just-ended session in Oklahoma:
• Defeated SB 257, which would have ostracized the Legal Aid Department in the state, and killed HB 1188, a bill to limit the venue of action for personal injury or wrongful death resulting from accidents outside the state.
Killed SJR 36, the Millionaire's Tax Amendment.
• Passed House Bill 791 on occupational disease, and HB 686, which provides for windshields on railroad motor cars.
• Increased unemployment compensation pay from $22 a week to $28, in passing HB 612.
Increased the amount in the second injury fund, and made the law more rigid in enforcement of taxation for the fund through HB 666.
• A companion bill, HB 1153, provides for a lump-sum payment from this special indemnity fund, with restrictions.
• HB 763 was amended to make bus companies place speedometers on all buses.
