A Nation of Milk Tipplers.
From the New Orleans Picayune.
If you had your share of milk last year you had 219 quarts, "you" meaning every man, woman and child in the United States. That was seventeen quarts better than you did in 1923, and proves that as tipplers our milk addiction is growing. These figures apply to milk actually drunk in the homes or used in household cooking. Manufacturers consumed the stupendous total of 8,811,415,000 pounds of milk, and that toothsome dainty, milk chocolate, used up very nearly 150,000,000 pounds of milk. Cheese took more than four billion pounds, just a little more than went into our annual output of ice cream. The latter product, however, was one of the few that showed a decrease for the year as compared with 1923. Four billion pounds and a little more went into condensed milk, that, too, being somewhat less than for the previous year. Powdered milk and cream took their toll of 82,518,000 pounds. The one statistic lacking is how many glass milk bottles were broken on the public highways, and how many tires were punctured as the result.
